Improve ocean health and marine biodiversity.

Project 1: Cleanwalk

Context

With all members of the team, we agreed on something : according to our previous experiences, to our observations and to our documentations, we do think that people are more and more keen on doing clean walks. It seems to be in tune with the times to do clean walks. Many exemples throw lights on the fact that students, middle-aged people or ageing people are willing to help environnment´s protection by doing clean walk. That is why an idea came to our mind.

We would like to create an app which enables people to identify hotspots (in other words beaches that need to be cleaned) and to organize clean walks with other people. There are good reasons to think that this app will be used : as we said, it is more and more liked to do clean walks. Furthermore, we do think that it could be even more spread if people had friends/colleagues to do it with. This app would enable it. Finally, all of us are aware of the emergency when it comes to protecting marine biodiversity so this app is very useful at the outset of the 21th centuary.

Target

This app would be dedicated to everyone who has the desire to improve our oceans health.
The main target for our app would be students and young workers. Indeed this section of the population is accustomed to the daily-use of apps. Furthermore collecting waste on a beach is a tiring task which requires physical vigour. However ageing-people and kids (with their parents) are also encouraged to participate. Kids and teenagers who represent our futur and the futur of our planet need to be sensitised to the extent of beach's pollution.
More broadly, this application would be an excellent awareness-raising tool for all categories of the population.

Service offered

This app aims at urging people to notice beach that need to be cleaned and at urging people to do clean walks. The fisrt service that is offered is to throw lights on dirty beach. A random utilisator could notice where does the beach is, he could put pictures of the beach in order to show it and finally he could program a clean walk (put date, hours...) The second service offered is just to give people the opportunity to take part to these clean walks.

We think that it could urge people to take part to these clean walks if we could reach an agreement with some stores which take ecology into account and then enable regular users to have bargain in these stores. So every users would have their own profile and they would gain points each time their take part in a clean walk

  • Planète Ocean is a film of Yann Arthus Bertrand and Michael Pitiot which alert the world to the consequences of human activities (like overfishing, tourism, global warming and above all plastic pollution)on the Ocean. The film showed people what was their impact on the fauna and flora marine which spurred them to take care of the ocean with, for instance, cleanwalks.
  • This article from Francetvinfo.fr highlights that cleanwalking is an increasing trend inside but also outside France which is principally supported by teenagers who want to preserve the planet.
  • This article from National Geographic highlights that there will be 600 million metric tons of plastic in the ocean in 2040 (for 150 million today). Obviously, it endangers the marine life because it can imprison turtles or other species and can be considered to be food.

    • Project 2: Ocean'lovers

    Context

    After several discussions with all members of the team, we realized that touristic offers to discover seas were increasing exponentially but they often disrespected ocean health and marine biodiversity.

    Our project is a website which will serve to holiday-makers which want to discover oceans and seas in a responsible way by giving them the location and contacts of touristic organizations which are environment-friendly. Consequently, this website will not be used every day but rather during summer holidays and by people who are next to seas, oceans or lakes. It targets people who can afford holidays next to seas or oceans (or who already live overthere) and who have an environmental awareness.

    Target

    Our project is mainly aimed at people who are interested in eco-responsible tourism and who want to have a positive impact on the environment during their vacations. Today, the commitment to respect the environment mainly concerns a young population. Thus our project mainly targets a population aged between 20 and 35 years old but more in general a population that likes to travel and at the same time wants to keep a positive impact on the environment (here the oceans).

    Service offered

    We would like to launch a website that brings together responsible touristic places and activities. Indeed, some activities offered to the public in places frequented by tourists are not respectul of the ocean and its environment. In addition, it is sometimes difficult to know - as a tourist - whether the proposed activity is environmentally friendly or not. Our goal with this application is not only to offer our user a tourist guide of activities but above all to offer him ideas of activities that help maintaining the health of the ocean and the marine biodiversity. With this application we assure the user of the sustainability of the activities.
    To do this, we plan to offer on the website - depending on the location chosen beforehand - a number of activities selected by us or by organizations that have certified these activities.
